The St. Michael's Music Trust
Charity Number 1092893
The St Michael Cornhill Music Trust is a
registered charity (Charity Number 1092893) established to promote and
preserve the considerable musical tradition of this ancient parish
church and contribute to the musical life of the City of London and the
Church of England.
The Music Trust's Patrons include Richard Popplewell, Michael Berkeley,
Sir Nicholas Jackson, Dame Gillian Weir, Sir David Willcocks, Mr John
Scott, Mr Stephen Cleobury, Dr Francis Jackson and Mrs Ralph Vaughan
Williams.
We know that a fine choir was singing in St Michael's in the early
1500s. We know also that the composer Henry Purcell rode on his horse
from Westminster to St Michael's to give the opening recital on the
organ in 1684; that for 32 years in the eighteenth century the church's
music was presided over by the Master of the King's Music, William
Boyce; that in 1864 the Royal College of Organists was founded here;
that in the modern era first performances have taken place here of music
by Britten, Howells, Vaughan Williams, Dyson, Darke, Orr and Berkeley.
We still have one of London's finest choirs to support and beautify our
worship in a wide repertory of incomparable musical settings.
Unfortunately the cost of maintaining a choir of this quality places a
considerable burden on the church finances. Therefore we are seeking
Sponsors for the Sunday services. You are invited to dedicate a
particular service (maybe annually, in memory of somebody close to you)
by sponsoring the choir for that week. The cost is £600, and you are
asked to gift-aid the donation if appropriate. You are invited to write
the dedication (for example, 'Sunday nearest 3 September is dedicated in
memory of ____ ') on a separate sheet attached to the gift-aid form, so
that the correct wording can be included on the weekly newsletter.
There is also the opportunity to sponsor a young singer for a year. Our
youngest choir members are in their early twenties, and are either
studying as postgraduate students or beginning to make their way in the
musical world as professionals. St Michael's offers these fine young
musicians invaluable training and experience. As a Sponsor of a Choral
Scholar (which costs £2,500 pa) you will be giving significant support
to the church's ministry, to its work with young people, and to the
careers of extremely accomplished but often struggling young musicians.
Valuable sponsorship in recent years has been received in memory of Mark
Millard, Sir Edward Howard, David Passey, Martin Harris and Peter
Lerwill.
